Torrens Questions Sessions Solution To Addiction Crisis
Ryan Torrens, Democratic Candidate for Attorney General of Florida, proposes solutions to combat the state’s ongoing problem of opioid addiction.
TAMPA, Fla - February 9, 2018 – As Florida struggles daily in the throws an addiction crisis, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions visited the Tampa area and declared, “I mean people should be able to take some aspirin sometime. Tough it out,” according to a FloridaPolitics.com article by Mitch Perry. Meanwhile, in Pasco County, FL, Ryan Torrens, a Tampa consumer advocate attorney and Democratic candidate for Attorney General of Florida, spoke before the Land O Lakes Democratic Club about creating an Addiction Taskforce to deal with the problem.
“I think that we need to handle the addictions crisis from many sides: we need to hold the big pharmaceutical companies accountable for their role in the prevalence of these highly dangerous drugs, we need to make treatment more widely available in Florida’s communities, we need to remove the stigma of addiction, and we need to have Floridians from the recovering community at the table, as well, to gain their insight,” said Torrens at the Tuesday evening club meeting.
Torrens has a special connection to this issue, as an alcoholic in recovery, he knows the struggles that everyday Floridians go through to find resources and get treatment for their addictions; he also is concerned by Attorney General Bondi’s over emphasis on the use of law enforcement. He contends that, while people who illegally traffic and sell these highly addictive and deadly substances should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, people who find themselves caught in the cycle of use, arrest, jail, release, & repeat should be given access to adequate treatment instead of a jail-cell-detox.
“Just taking aspirin and toughing it out doesn’t fix the problem,” says Torrens, “addiction is the problem.” He remarked that for some people that take prescription pain medication to get them through chronic pain, so they can have a normal life, prescription opioids should remain legally available.
Torrens has been campaigning across the State of Florida, all the while fighting for his clients as a consumer protection lawyer. He says that he is running to put the Attorney General’s office back on the side of consumers again.
