Torrens Takes on Betsy DeVos, Defends Florida's Right To Regulate Student Loan Servicers

March 1, 2018

“If Betsy DeVos thinks she’s going to take away Florida’s right to protect our students from predatory lenders, she will have to get through me first!”

TAMPA, Fla – March 1, 2018 – Fighting for Florida’s students, Ryan Torrens, Democratic candidate for Florida Attorney General, promises to join the efforts of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and 20 other attorneys general in opposing Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ efforts to protect student loan servicers from state oversight.

Leaving a mediation on Wednesday where he was fighting to save his client’s home from foreclosure, Torrens said: “It’s a sad day in America when the federal government attempts to take away the rights of the states to protect their students in favor of predatory companies ripping off our students.”

In a recent Politico article, it was reported that Secretary DeVos is preparing to issue a “Notice of Interpretation” that student loan collection companies will be exempt from the oversight of state lawmakers and regulators. More than 20 Attorneys General, led by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, have issued a letter expressing concern with the impact on borrowers if the Education Department tries to block the states from protecting their students from predatory student loan companies.

“I have represented students being ripped off by predatory lenders. Fighting for Florida’s students isn’t a partisan issue. It’s about fighting what’s wrong and doing what’s right. If Betsy DeVos thinks she’s going to take away Florida’s right to protect our students from predatory student lenders, she will have to get through me first,” said Torrens.

Torrens has been campaigning across the State of Florida, all the while fighting for his clients as a consumer protection lawyer. He says that he is running to put the Attorney General’s office back on the side of consumers again.
